Introduction
Every Volkswagen bus that was produced in Germany has two metal plates fixed inside. They are pictured above. The left plate is the 'chassis plate', the plate on the right is the 'M-plate'. Both plates contain interesting information. If you are curious to the meaning of the information they contain then you have come to the right spot.

This site will help you to decode the plates from the 1967-1979 Volkwagen Transporter and Microbus. It is the 2nd generation of Transporters, also known as 'T2', Baywindow' or 'Breadloaf'. For those of you that are wondering what a 2nd generation bus looks like. Below is an example.
