I have yet to experience a cable break in my bus. Although it did happen on the way home from a cruising weekend to the beach in my bug. Sadly I was 4 miles from Maryland's best eastern shore VW shop and it was Sunday. They were closed so I was towed home 58 miles. I had always carried a spare but for some reason I didn't have one. Must have given it away at some point. Anyway the reason for my message is to say that the newer replacement cables are often of poor quality. I replaced my cable with a brand new one and on the next road trip of 100 miles the new cable came off twice. I discovered that where it connects to the accelerator it tends to bend. So I was able to add a barrel nut on the accelerator end just like at the carburetor. This seemed to be the only way to get the new cable to stay on. And YES I did put the cable on correctly. In fact Dick at Dicks Autohaus said he often welded a small bead on the end just to keep the new cables from coming off. So keep your eye on the new cable for a while to be sure it stays strong and secure. Neal F Jarvis Office Manager RJ Berra Inc. T/A Services Unlimited Co. I was headed out of town with my girl friend (now wife) for a week long camping trip. I did not have a spare. I called up Darrell at Silver Lake VW in Wilmington, NC at 5 pm on a Friday. He usually doesn't have too many parts buses at the shop. He actually answered and just so happened to have a 68 bus ( same as mine) that actually had a cable still in it. He pulled it for me right then. I took a cab to get to his shop, slid some money under the door, and picked up my cable from a hiding spot. I installed it on the side of the road and kept on trucking with a very patient lovely woman. That was the first of many breakdown that week, but all were fixable on the side of the road. What a great trip! Many kudos to such great people, like Darrel who are like the salt of the earth. > > David Kelly > 68 VW camper > > Sent from my iPhone > > On Nov 4, 2013, at 10:01 PM, "thewestyman" <zolo at foxinternet.net> wrote: > >> It >> took me about an hour to remove the old cable, grease and insert the new >> one, hook up the carb linkage, and smile. >> > _______________________________________________ > type2 mailing list > type2 at type2.com > https://www.type2.com/lists/type2/listinfo
