I think you have to look at it from a valve timing point of view... not just how they open.. but when so.. by adj the amount of "lash" ... you change the valve timing from a solid pov... if you have 1 thou clearance,, vs 10 thou clearance.. the latter will delay the valve timing wrt 1 thou from a hyd pov...
