David, Peak Performance was tops in my mind but now gone apparently (they did move once though), I think Dolan used to use Paul's VW which was somewhere inside the beltway?, but I think they changed hands or went out of business as well, and weren't so good, a local would know more. If they still exist (and they have a www site) and you don't mind a bit of a detour on the way to NC you can't beat Keith's in Clendenin WV. Keith is dead nigh 10-15 years, but his son who I presume still owns it is top notch, he has grown up doing nothing but VW's. 1-800-RACEAVW. That guy has been building big, powerful T1's (and used to do T4's and inline for FWD) for 40+ years that stay together, and have won countless races. And they don't look at you crazy when you say you want a stocker 1600 spin balanced, etc, etc, and know how to do it. They were one of the only companies in the 80's who understood how to correctly rebuild an inline VW diesel head, and have always been top notch in the WV, southern VA, NC VW community. I have gone through 2 "professionally rebuilt" engines in the last few years. Each only lasted me around 5000 miles. I have a 68 bus that I am looking to have an engine built for. Anyone can bolt together a bunch of Chinese parts And call it new. I'm looking for a builder with experience in building high quality LONG LASTING motors that don't leak, and someone who knows all the tricks of the trade. Im not looking for a race motor, but rather a torquey, powerful engine that will push my heavy air conditioned (will be) camper loaded with kids. I will be in the Md/Pa/DE area for at least 3 weeks then its back to NC. Thanks for all your suggestions.
