Note that open isn't the only failure mode for the factory t-stat.
I've had one t1 thermostat go bad, and when it did it ballooned out
and up, before it split, bending the t-stat rod and the bracket,
wedging the flaps closed.  Bent one pushrod tube, too, against the
pushrod, which wore a hole in it....
