[T2] [Q] Bus Stopped Running While Driving

On a recent trip, my '71 Westy quit running while going down the road, and
I would appreciate some feedback on possible causes.  Details are:

1. Drove 1 1/2 hours in the morning (to destination)
2. Bus sat in the sun for several hours
3. Drove 1 1/2 hours back home that night
4. Put in gas when about 45 minutes from home
5. Made one more stop about 10 minutes from home
6. When heading out again, bus slowly began to shut down
7. There was some smoke from the right rear (plastic left from resto)
8.  Tried to restart several times, but to no avail
9.  Tried to coast and "pop the clutch", but there was significant "bucking"
10.  Didn't expect this to work, but thought it "fun" to try...
11.  (The bus coasted easily before trying to start this way...)
12.  Notices one broken wire to the coil -- (part of) the problem?

Thoughts?
