Well, I had the exact same problem feeling like an idiot when I swapped my old stock dizzy with an svda and pertronix module last month. I did everything right in terms of placing the spark plug wires on the now 180 degrees rotated distributor, then tried starting over the whole range that the distributor can turned, without success. The issue was persistence. I never cranked the engine long enough to get it to start. Once I was confident that the distributor was approximately in the right place by timing it statically, made sure I had spark, I kept cranking and it eventually started. Good luck! Fires once in a while but not enough to run or get a timing light on.
