[T2] Running rich or lean?

I know it's very important to adjust my carbs correctly on my 74 bus with stock carbs.  I really don't know how to tell if I need to or not.  

I've been reading in my Haynes manual about their adjusting method.  Says I need a exhaust analyzer. I still need to read all the archives on type2.com.  I'll start that tomorrow.  

Is there a way to tell if I'm running lean or rich, anyway?  Like soot, in the tail pipe?  Mine is clean and dry.
