There is a solution then - use locking nuts. Probably will need to hold 
the stud with vicegrips to keep them from threading out of the block 
when removing though. No worse than dealing with double nuts.

Wonder if a guy needs to adapt the VW torque values to take into account 
the locking nut friction? What would that amount to? 3-4 ft/lbs?
