The birth-certificate is nice to have with your car. But it has become quite expensive and the data they can provide you is almost the same as what is stamped on the M-plate. The only additional information they can give you is the actual date of production (rather than the planned production date) and the date the vehicle left the factory.

VW stopped printing the original engine number on the certificate. Now they only tell you if the current engine is the original one or not (provided that you give them the number when you apply for the certificate of course).
