What the H_ll happened?

A few weeks ago while my wife and I were out looking at the fall colors, a deer decided that it wanted to join us in our Vw Cabrio.  As I was staring at the four sharp hoofs that were diving off the hill side, I stood the Cabrio on its front bumper, trying to discourage the beast from joining us in our convertible but to no avail. It decide to take out the front fender, hood and headlight instead.  But that is another  story!

The result is my three week quest to find the right replacement parts for my nearly 20 year old vehicle.  Remember when your only choice in headlights was round or rectangle? Remember when a headlight was $5.  Flash forward 50 years and today a headlight can easily cost you $100.  What has changed.  The round seal beam illuminated the road at night.  So does todays.  Why  are we paying 20 times the cost for the same or worse results today?

I was curious what a BUS sealed beam would cost today? $13.62 (autohausaz) and was surprised to see that they offered a supposed upgrade for a halogen H4 conversion, $53.  I guess that is great in light its half what my 2001Jetta's light would cost.

Am I over the hill?  Or has the world gone NUTS!
