Richard asked: > I have to run SAE 50 in the summer. SAE 30 is too thin, my oil >pressure light will flicker in the summers on 30 weight. David's main responses were: > >of course, if your oil light is flickering with 30 weight in the >summer - that's actually a sign of low oil pressure. :) Maybe just a >sticking relief valve, but could be worn mains (or even a worn out >pump...). Flickering oil-P light at slow idle after fast cruising is not proof of anything terribly wrong. My 1600DP went hundreds of mi in this condition. If the oil P rises promptly to, say, 30 - 50 psi upon returning to cruising revs, that is the more important fact. > the 50w is just a bandaid >in florida year round, 20w50 (valvoline + rislone) - I bailed on >straight weight a long time ago. I agree, precisely. I see no reason to use any single-viscosity crankcase oil. Multigrade really is as purported (if changed often enough). -- Robt Mann Whangaparaoa, New Zealand '73 VW 1600dp Devon camper '53 Meteor V8 various Jawa-CZ and Jawa-NZ strokers
