You should hear when the lifters are pumped up, but then it will be hot. 
  If they were adjusted cold and not pumped up, they should still be 
good IF you could feel when the adjustor screw actually touched the 
lifter (I turn by hand back and forth to feel it), then back off about 2 
turns.
