[T2] Rings only or pistons and jugs?

1.8 L type 4 that smokes like a chimney but runs fine otherwise. I
haven't had a chance to do a compression check yet.

As a general rule, should I be looking at buying a new set of pistons
or just honing the jugs and getting a new set of rings?

(Yes, I understand what I need may change when I get the existing
pistons off ... I'm not pre-ordering parts, just trying to get an idea.)
