Iâll second this approach. I do this routinely on vintage VWs that run erratically. The flow rate is given in Bentley. If one uses a glass jar, one can get a good look at the liquid that your carbs see. In several cases, what flowed into the jar from my engines was troubling, to say the least. There was a lot of sediment and occasionally a two-phase mixture. Both times I ended up pulling the gas tank. The bottom was a pile of rust, flakes, and other particulates. Usually, the sock mesh filter had disintegrated and all this junk was flowing right into the carbs. I ended up refurbishing the tank. This is a tedious process, but absolutely necessary to restore operation of my engines.
