From: <accessys at smart.net>> > they also made two different Bay rear torsion bars > one for passenger busses and another heavier duty one for truck versions > ok,, can you tell which ones are which... are they colour coded.. ie .. red is light duty,, green is heavy duty... are they thicker,,,, ? more on that copied below.... Also.. david raistrick" <keen at icantclick.org wrote > but bays got significantly heavier in the rear... And > they tend to sag in the rear, not the front. Probably because they're > all rear-heavy, but maybe the quality of the torsion springs and > mounts is part of it. My 74 Bay Westfalia seems to weigh in at 990kg on each axle.... so it doesn't really seem rear-heavy... also I noted ... if you put a floor jack under a trailer hitch on a "saggy" bus.. and lift ... you will see the entire bus rise until you top out the rear suspension,, then only the rear will lift.. seems that torsion bars sort of equalize the weight??? ok,, back to the topic of heavy duty torsion bars.. a while back , you [Accessys at smart.net] mentioned Sent: Tuesday, March 25, 2008 3:26 PM Subject: RE: [T2] rear torsion bars > I just measured the heavy duty ones that I have for my bus and they > are very definately a deep brownish red, and the shaft is 26mm in > diameter and I have a spare pair of green torsion bars.. iirc.. they came out of a 78 camper that I parted out. they measure 29mm x 610mm I would think the 3mm larger ones might be heavy duty...??? Scott Lyons wrote Re: [T2] rear torsion bars the VW parts book lists 4 different torsion bars. the green bars are heavy duty, as they are listed as being for M140 (fire truck) and M531 (hard torsion bar). there seems to be 2 different green bars however and i can't say how you would tell them apart if the numbers were not on them. according to the book, since a camper was built on a type 231, your '74 should have 211 511 115 C and 116 C, which are green bars and heavier duty. i can't say for sure if the bars from a '78 are the same as '74 since the parts book technically ends at '72. we have a '78 7-passenger bus here with the rear suspension taken apart and it has red-brown torsion bars, which also agrees with my parts book info. the photo with the two bars that are different lengths doesn't make any sense to me. they are the same length.
