It is easy to clip a small vicegrip on the bar the thermostat cable 
clips to and rock the flapper bar back and forth to verify they are free 
and still spring loaded-and you can wire that vicegrip pulled back to 
close the flaps for faster warmup in winter if your thermostat (old 
style) failed.
