When the motor is running approx as it ever does before quitting, slap a stethoscope on such parts as you can readily reach - crankcase, but also other surfaces. Valve seat fragments rattling around in a cylinder will make a sound you (or I) have never heard, but it will be obviously odd. Absent a steth borrowed from a friendly medico, a big screwdriver in your ear is far better than nothing.
