I can now clarify this minor matter. *Elsewhere* in the same 1972 owner's booklet: When the pointer is at "R" Reserve â there is approx. 5 liters of fuel remaining in the tank. Soon after acquiring my '73 a decade ago I measured this (an inherently uncertain process) and found 10 litre. (I insert here that such a measurement, entailing total draining of the tank, should not be done unless there's a good filter after the tank. A 4-decade-old tank is likely to have bulk dirt slopping around its floor.) But a couple y ago I ran out of fuel when the guage was showing just under 1/4. A fine point is that steep hills change not only the reading but also the prospects of actually delivering the dregs from a nominally empty tank. The fuel guage and its mysterious ancillary electrics should not be closely trusted when several decades old. My practical advice: 1 Retain or restore the old knack, *required* before VW first installed that luxury the fuel guage, of noting the mileage showing when you fill up. 2 Measure your fuel economy routinely, by noting the mileage between fills. (This is the only accurate way to measure fuel consumption.) 3 Do not trust the guage as it goes down past 1/4. 4 Carry a gallon of spare fuel in a proper container. cheers Robt Mann '73 Devon 1600dp On Thu, Feb 2, 2017 at 4:59 AM, Nathan <nathan at wandrly.co> wrote: > Yeah, R for reserve no?
