That's the "past the last/empty mark on the gauge" reserve for early gauges (that don't have the R area defined), it's the R or red area on gauges that do have it defined. It's not a switchable reserve like the early early stuff, just a built in margin of error in the gauge. And it's why they say "R" on the end and not "E" :)
