I'd think it is the clutch cable - or the bowden tube (boden?). Sometimes the cable can fray inside one of the protective tubes, and you won't see it, until you pull the cable. That is also probably the easiest troubleshooting thing - pull the cable, and you can usually see right away if there is a problem with it.
