I just realized I can remove the fan...sorry I am new to these T4 engines ;)

Way easier - I can't believe I wasted all that time with the magnets and screwdrivers....

I now see what the issue with the alternator is - the lower bracket is supposed to be a U-shaped piece of metal, and the one I had was only L-shaped, part of it had snapped off.
