True, I have not hit a deer with a type 2. I have hit 7 total in my life, 2 pretty hard. A big doe, I hit at 70mph with my 91 Vanagon. Right side of the upper grille, headlights, radiator and a/c condensor. Nobody wanted to fix it right, but I had a relationship with the dealer's body shop. I pulled the dash and heater in their parking lot, they did all the work including some straightening of the inside beam that doubles as the fresh air duct, then I put the dash and heater (new core and blower) back in, then they finished it. They did it for less than they bid it for. This was pretty severe damage and could have been much less if I had just slowed down to 50mph in a known deer zone. The damage would have been much worse in a bay or splitty. 70-up bays have a lot more metal in the under floor area and door beams. Still nothing compared to the cage of the Vanagon. A hit this hard might have bent the dash in a bay window. But, I could live with that. A question, if anybody knows: did the post 1979 type 2's ever get more crash structure in front? Brazil perhaps with the radiator support? I actually love bays more than Vanagons. I like the size and the rear weight bias. I think the splitty is way less strong in front, as well as about 10" shorter. I do intend to drive my 1956 single cab a bit, but not the miles I hope to put on newer cars.
