usually both bad floats and vacuum leaks make more trouble at low loads
than high load or high speed running. Whatever mixture inaccuracies they
are counteracted by a lot more flow. So, I would say not either floats nor
vacuum leaks.
I still say fuel delivery.
Funny you mentioned modern carbs. what the Kadron is is a Brazil Solex
COPY" of the 1952-1957 Porsche Super carb. 40 PBIC or some 40 PIBC, it
seems. These were pretty nice carbs and I do not know why Brosol made them.
I think you could be pretty happy with a set from Kaddy Shack. Those guys
are nearly ALONE in giving nationwide support for these.
I know you don't like the OE carbs and there is some reason to. They have
that central idling carb that is part of the left and supplies MOST of the
idle fuel/ air to both sides. But not all. So, you end up with 3 idle jets
total. I'd guess it was to keep it running when the vacuum retard was in
effect, that is, the timing running at 5 AFTER tdc. When all this stuff is
good and working right it works great. I had a 1973 automatic that had a
bad vacuum diaphragm when I got it. Back in 1981 or so. I tried everything
I could to work around it but finally bought the diaphragm for about1/4
what I paid for the whole bus. It worked GREAT after that. It had so much
off idle on could nearly pull the front wheels bouncing it!
