For any who (like me) have never dropped an 'upright' motor, there is hope in my recent experience. The bulkhead in my '73 Devon does* just *allow me to reach around with a 36mm socket. Once you've latched onto that big nut, the fully accessible nut at the other end of its shaft, viz. the outermost nut at the rear end of the pulley driving the generator or alternator, is all you need. Heck, my buddy Dennis even found just in time a 36mm socket on the roadside, busted but needing only a worm-drive clip to 'restore' it! Sure, our R hands felt somewhat 'squashed' for a day or two, but us not-yet-motor-droppers are grateful we were able to remove & re-install the alternator. As previously mentioned, the Bosch alternator on my '73 1600 is scarcely fatter than the old generators, and I would urge consideration of trading in that gen for a reco'd alternator.
