I took it off this morning, and put some paint stripper on it. Amazingly
enough it only took the newer layers of paint off, not the original layer.

That is why we have been using 3M's Safest Stripper for years and recently tried the Orange Stripper.  Strips off the aftermarket paint and tends to leave the factory paint if not left on too long.  Plus both products are not toxic to humans.
