Paint and interior colors

Paint colors

The paint color of the car is indicated by the first 4 numbers (PPPPII). In most cases this code can be devided in two. The first two characters (PPPPII) stand for the paintcolor used for the lower part of the car. The last two characters (PPPPII) identify the color on the upper part of the bus. Until 1970 the border between the two colors was the raingutter around the roof. From 1971-1979 the borderwas ca. 10cm below the windows, there is a profile in the metal at this point. See the examples below (1971-1979 busses).

This bus has paint code 'J6J6' meaning: Color lower part: Neptune Blue (J6) Color upper part: Neptune Blue (J6)
This is a, not very common, two tone bus with paint code 'G9R1': Color lower part: Senegal Red (G9) Color upper part; Pastell White (R1)

Sonderlackierung (special paint)

Busses produced for a special purpose often don't have the standard paint color codes. They have a 'Sonderlackierung', which means they have a special paint color. Examples of such vehicles are: Westfalia campmobiles, Army vehicles, Fire Trucks and German mail vehicles.They have a code starting with a '5' or a '9' in most cases. For example: '9135' stands for 'postgelb' ('Mail Yellow') a color used exclusively for the 'Deutsche Bundespost' (German Mail).

It's not clear why VW used special paint codes for Westfalia campmobiles. The colors on these busses are actually standardcolors, but are indicated by a special code.

M-plate with paint sticker For each color I listed two different types of codes. The first one is the 'plate code'. This is the code as it is printed on the M-plate. The second code is the 'color code'. Volkswagen usesthis number to note colors in their literature (e.g. archives and for ordering paint). You canalso find this code in your car. It is printed on the silver sticker which is fixed below the M-plate.

The picture on the left shows the position of the M-plate and the sticker in a 1976 bus. The plate reads "E1E1" (color lower and upper part is "Bright Orange"). The sticker says "leuchtorange L 20 B". This is the German name for the color. "L 20 B" is the color code.
