I think that may help you figure out that the colour bands are for the test network test socket , which in most cases , that wire can be ignored as NOBODY uses that test network test socket.... i think you will notice the 0.5mm small wires are also the test points, and like I said, those wires are probably not needed but lets try this to identify what goes where... caution, It really depends on where the harness was " 'carved off' ..randomly..".. you may run into a few black wires... the rest are unique colour to each component the list of black wires below can be confooosing.. when you say carved off.. I have to assume the terminals on the wires are cut off.. gone.. you need to notice that most of the lamp holders [signal, brake, ground, reverse] have 0.250 spades,, and 0.125 ish spades on the tail lamp holder you need to notice that there are large, 1.5mm dia ,, and 1.0 dia ,, and small 0.5mm dia wire.. the next list below that , of wires only in the taillight housing have the description, and I added the lamp address,M4 and the track no.54 --bentley 1974- chap4-pg40 if you have a different manual, it may be different page, chapter, and track no.. sigh.. can't help that.. these wires that are [could be] all black... reverse lights , should be obvious as the fuse holder is attached to the ignition coil, goes to the trans nose cone switch, then returns to the lamp holder ignition power to coil, power should go on and off with Key,, with turn signals off, brake off, trans in neutral and westfalia harness alternator trigger to aux battery relay, only found on some westfalia Alt harness attaches to battery B+ the carb choke, and jet wires are black toooo.. but they are not in a harness,, so I think I [we, you] can ignore them.. IIRC, there is another black wire , that is very easy to interchange with the coil power wire,, I can't remember what that wire feeds tho! lol you may have to spell out what colour wires you are looking at Ok,,, just looking at the wiring at the lamp holders.. you have a large harness in the right side lampholder that enters the bottom.. also there is a side marker harness at the top.. only 2 wires... the side marker ground tags to the body beside the lampholder you have a large harness in the left side lampholder that enters the top... also there is a side marker harness at the bottom,, .. only 2 wires... the side marker ground tags to the body beside the lampholder top to bottom on the lamp holder Left side rear Turn signal - black / white -0.250" term 1.0 dia dwg M6 track 43 ----bugged on is a *white 1.0 dia* to test network test socket 10 ground - brown -0.250" term Brake - black / red -0.250" term 1.5 dia dwg M4 track 54 --- bugged on is a black / red 0.5 dia to test network test socket 12 Tail - grey / black -0.125" term 0.5 dia dwg M4 track 30 --- bugged on is a red 0.5 dia ??? to test network test socket ??? also there is a black -0.125" term for the side marker lamp M12 track 31.. reverse - black -0.250" term 1.5 dia dwg M16 track 66 note , dwg says *black / white 0.5 dia on dwg* to test network test socket 10 right side rear Turn signal - black / green -0.250" term 1.0 dia dwg M8 track 47 ---bugged on is a black / green 0.5 dia wire to test network test socket 11 ground brown-0.250" term- Brake - black / red -0.250" term 1.5 dia dwg M2 track 53... bugged on is a 1.5 dia black / red to left side M4 track 54 Tail - grey / red -0.125" 0.5 dia dwg M2 track 35 --- bugged on is a grey / red 0.5 dia to license light X also there is a black -0.125" term for the side marker light.. reverse - black -0.250" term dwg M17 track 65 phew,,, I hope you can understand that....... otherwise,, write back ----- Original Message ----- From: "syd clarke" <sydclarke at shaw.ca> To: <type2 at type2.com> Sent: Saturday, July 05, 2014 5:33 PM Subject: [T2] my '74 bus tailight wires > Hi..scoggy here in Canada..and.. my plight is that the 'body guy' just > 'carved off' the wires..randomly..and now that I am at my last ..point..I > have read the manual over, and over, but if someone else had a similar '74 > bus..could they just look and see what wires go to each bulb..then I could > 'color coordinate' my wires..and be done!
