Aside from the loss of power and longevity from the T4 engine, your biggest hangup will be the tinwork. The trans is geared differently IIRC, so an early bus transaxle will be desirable, but not absolutely necessary. This is what the tin looks like: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=321977&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 I would HIGHLY recommend sticking with the T4 engine, and rolling it up to 2.0 liters from the 1700 it came with. It was made to push around heavier vehicles like busses and Type 4 cars. Cruising along at 85mph in a late bay at 5000ft is an absolute joy that will be tough to do with a 1600.
