Make sure lifters are pumped up, then let engine cool. IE, don't do this if you did not drive for a month. Ensure the lifter screw turns easily by backing off the adjusting nut and twirling the screw by hand or "lightly" with a screwdriver, so you can feel when the lifter is just touched- if not pumped up it can eaily push in and you "think" it touches when piston bottoms out and you will be way too tight! (think burnt valve as it cannot close) The theory is to be BETWEEN the end positions of the piston- hence the two turns. Those who use 1 or 1.5 turns think they can go longer between checks, but may get issues at warmup or valve may not fully open. Hold the lifter position with the screwdriver as you tighten the nut with a box wrench, or you may be adding turns to the screw. Loud clattering at warmup (like you didn't drive for a week) means wait until the lifters are pumped up before taking off- it should quiet down. VW specs 2 turns. I have mine at 1.5 turns for feel good reasons and nothing exotic just seems to be majority of opinions. repeat on other 3cyl, > new engine is done slightly differently > > > Bob > > > > On Mon, 19 May 2014, Monty Rowden wrote: > >> Date: Mon, 19 May 2014 11:23:16 -0500 >> From: Monty Rowden <montyrowden at yahoo.com> >> To: type2 at type2.com >> Subject: [T2] Hydraulic lifters >> >> Hello volks. >> >> Does anyone know the procedure for adjusting valves in an engine with >> hydraulic lifters?
