You can try giving the starter a tap with a hammer or the like. This sounds like the classic "old wiring" syndrome. Do you have a starter relay in place? You can also "jump" the terminals on the starter (just make sure it isn't in gear) or you can add a switch so you can do it from an easier place. Hope this helps.
