We limped home Wed morning, clutch slipping more & more (able to transmit only c.10 hp, I estimate). Took the coast route from Waipu - more scenic, less traffic to hold up - to avoid the Brynderwyns mountain road. Slackening the clutch cable had helped somewhat, but it is clear the clutch will have to be reco'd. The two prime hypotheses are: (1) oil in friction material from failed seal or cracked case, (2) friction material simply worn out, Ether way, I require a new clutch plate, no? While the transmission is apart, not only the thrust bearing but also the gearbox should be reco'd, indicated by the pulsing discordant music in bottom gear and extreme difficulty changing down from 3rd to 2nd. This is among the sparse evidence that my bus has done no mere 45,000 mi (showing on odometer in perfect condition) but at least 145,000. Absent a local reputable VW expert, Dennis & I are tempted to do these tasks in bold DIY fashion. Any pointers beyond those in the T2-List archives will be appreciated. Robt Mann '73 1600dp Devon
