park bus somewhere level you can leave it at least the weekend, flat, on concrete preferred. remove motor break loose axle nuts and lug nuts and the big 27mm nuts and 4 nuts each RGBs remove wheels and brake drums and brakes. set bus on axle stand under the rear torsion tube. Place the rear tires under bus. drain gear oil remove RGB covers, and upper gears remove transmission a la Muir Idiot book. here is where you skip to the Bentley take off RGBs at the inner ring of 6 nuts, pull off axle tubes and inner half rgbs now you remove snap rings, I ground a pair of long needle nose pliers to fit. It's not that bad with the right tool Now pull the axles out, examine the axle shaft spades and the fulcrum plates for wear. the fulcrum plates often are be worn, they are available new then pull out the crown gears, also inspect for crack and replace if cracked. anyhow, maybe it's not the tranny. let us know your finds. ................................................ -----Original Message----- From: C. Once you get the rubber boots off and the hemispherical bells removed, you will need a large snap ring plier for removing the snap rings. I have a larger sized quality brand like proto or crescent needle nose plier with the tips slightly bent that sort of works. Its quite the job to get those buggers out. Be careful, easy to bark a nuckle or worse in the process. Once the snap ring is removed, then all the axle and plates and parts almost fall out. To reinstall the pieces, grease them with moly grease or other nice similar sticky stuff to hold them in place as you insert the axles. Installing the snap rings is no easier than the removal, sadly. Best of luck. Let us know how it turns out! Chris 64 DD Kamper Kit Just turned 50 on 9/6/2013!! Scientists seek to understand what is, while engineers seek to create what never was. And after all the things I did for her/him. Anyway, I was heading to work and thought I'd drive my old bus . so I could get it to Krown today. got to the top of my small hill and something exploded . I think my transmission locked up . clutch still works so I was able to get into neutral and roll back down the hill into my driveway . I do have a rebuilt transmission I want to install . Dougie Dee did it for me maybe a year or so ago . anyway, my question. How do you remove the axles (they are axles right?) from the side of the transmission. I've rebuilt redux boxes a couple times but I've never taken the axles off. And - I'm going to be reinstalling the transmission that originally came with my 60 - is there anyway of knowing how it will perform with a 1500 or 1600 vs. the 1200 it was originally paired with. _______________________________________________ vintagebus mailing list vintagebus at type2.com https://www.type2.com/lists/vintagebus/listinfo _______________________________________________ vintagebus mailing list vintagebus at type2.com https://www.type2.com/lists/vintagebus/listinfo
