[T2] speedo cable noise

With this talk of removing the dash - I'm reminded that my speedo cable
makes noise. I'm thinking I just need to pull it off the back of the speedo
and put some lube in it -but not sure if

a)      That is the right thing to do, and

b)      If it is the right thing to do, what type of lube?

 

Thanks for any tips on  this. Oh yeah, this is on my '69.
